Motorbike Trips and Motorbike Hire at Columbus International in Cannes, France
from my personal dream bike stash
Hello Columbus Team.
Before we left Cannes, we were speaking about your plans to visit the States in a few years and ride across the country. I was trying to convey how, in some areas, the distances are great and there can be little (development) to see for miles (and miles).
These are images of a dual sport ride across part of Northern New Mexico which was mostly on dirt roads, but the country in the west can often appear such as this.

Hello Columbus Team,
Here I attach some pics of the GS last week. Beautiful ride across the Provence to the French Riviera. I uploaded a full album on Facebook. Lots of people have asked for your motorcycle rentals in South of France.
Thanks again for all your help,
Hello Columbus Team,
It has been really a pleasure dealing with you on this adventure; from start to finish, you’ve been exceptionally good about communicating with us and straight up about the details as well as very fair with the pricing of the rental. As experienced travelers, we have some understanding of the nature of your business and we can tell you that your service has been exceptional.

Days getting shorter? Temperatures dropping? But don’t want to stop riding?
With plenty of sunshine, October is great for motorcycling in South of France. The Route Napoleon, the Provence and the coastal routes between Monaco and Marseille are waiting for you. What’s more, for any BMW or Ducati rental over 2 days, we’ll give you a bottle of Veuve Clicquot champagne as a present. Offer ends 31 October 2012.
Interested? Please click here for our selection of rental motorcycles. We will get back to your enquiry within 12 working hours. Guaranteed.
We wanted to share an email and pictures from Alain and Josée, who rented two BMW’s with us:
“…We already miss the diversity of sights and terrain that our 11-day ride presented. Your motorbikes ran perfectly and the Michelin Pilot Road 3’s where well matched for the twisting mountain roads. We anticipate another run in spring 2013, and will communicate with you at that time.
We have attached a few pictures of the Alps and Burgundy - hope these transmit the enjoyment of our latest journey. Too bad you can`t see our smiles behind the visors….”
Columbus delivered a BMW R1200 GS and a F800R to Alain & Josée’s hotel in Nice and then picked up the bikes again in Lyon. Here the “parting shot” with the bikes loaded in the van before Alain & Josée returned to Quebec and Columbus transported the bikes back to Cannes.
Thanks for being great customers!
A few pictures of a recent tour to the 2012 Mugello MotoGP on our rental motorcycles.
We delivered a selection of Roadsters (BMW F800R & KTM 690 Duke) and Tourers (BMW R1200 GS & Ducati Multistrada 1200) to Nice Airport for Masis, Harry, Howard and Marcello.
Our customers then set off to Italy. We held on to their bulky suitcases during their tour of Tuscany and Lake Como. Then 10 days later, we picked up our hire motorbikes again at their residence in Provence.
Thanks again for being great customers!
Ducati is known for its sports motorcycles. But over the last years, Ducati has launched models such as the Diavel, Multistrada 1200, Monster, Hypermotard, Streetfighter and 848 Superbike. Having offered the above bikes as rental motorcycle in the South of France, we would like to provide some insight into our experience and customer feedback about these bikes.
The South of France offers exceptional motorcycling trips. While the Cote Azur offers winding coast roads, the Provence spoils the rider with rolling hills between picturesque villages. The French Alps give riders access to endless amounts of twisting mountain routes. These conditions are the ideal playground for motorbike touring.
This is Ducati’s entry into the power cruiser market. Its design attracts attention. Turn the ignition and the burbling sound of the Testastretta engine comes into play. The best sound is the “crackle and pop” on the overrun.
Despite the large 240-section rear tyre the handling of the Diavel is good. Obviously, it is not as nimble as our rental KTM 690 Duke, but thanks to the low seat height, the Diavel inspires confidence.
It is rather comfortable for two-up riding. Side panniers are not available. Luggage has to be transported by rucksack if you choose this rental motorcycle.
With this bike you get two bikes for the price of one – a custom cruiser and a good handling bike comfortable for two-up riding.
Ducati Multistrada 1200
Despite its size, this bike feels light. This rental motorcycle copes well with the motorcycle roads of the South of France: comfortable munching miles on the Autoroute, no problem keeping up with sportsbikes on sweeping bends and taking hairpins in a stride.
The seat height can be changed to cater for taller and shorter riders. But the best thing is the passenger comfort. Riding two up is a pleasure for both rider and pillion. This bike can also be fitted with panniers.
The feel-good factor is more than present on this bike. But it’s the versatility of this sport touring motorcycle which wins over rider and passenger.
Ducati Monster 696
Being the lightest bike of its class gives excellent handling. The 160-section rear tyre adds to the nimble feel. Be it sweeping bends or hairpins, the Monster 696 feels at ease. Its compact size helps when splitting lanes (legal in France). It won’t take long to build confidence on this Ducati rental bike.
The Monster 696 can also be ridden two-up. A motorcycle day trip is OK with a passenger. However, longer motorcycle tours are better alone. Panniers are available.
Overall, this bike is a hoot to ride. This bike should not be dismissed on the grounds that it is “entry-level”. It has a lot to offer and guarantees loads of smiles per miles.
Ducati Streetfighter 1098
The Streetfighter is unforgiving towards uncommitted riders and requires 100% focus all the time. Correct lines need to be selected before entering turns. Besides, the fuel level of the tank influences the handing. The riding position is forward facing with most of your body’s weight on your wrists. Passengers will not be too happy on this bike. Luggage is not an option.
The Streetfighter still manages to deliver a massive feel-good factor. The key to enjoying this bike is being an experienced rider.
Ducati Hypermotard 1100
This is Ducati’s venture into the super-moto category. The upright riding position together with wide handlebars gives an “in control feel”.
The seat height is pretty high. Riding two-up is comfortable. Passengers do not need to be afraid of longer tours. The downside is the lack of luggage space and small fuel tank. The 1100 Desmodue engine has loads of torque and does not need to be revved to perform.
Overall, this bike convinces with incredibly handling. The downside is the low fuel range and being tempted to ride above your abilities.
Ducati Supersport 848
The beauty of this bike would deserve to be parked in your living room. Similar to the Streetfighter, this bike requires an experienced rider. A novice will have little joy. Twisty mountain roads are not the ideal environment for this bike. This bike prefers fast sweeping turns or track days.
On a practical note, this bike generates massive heat in slow moving traffic. The second issue is when you have to turn the handlebars full lock, the bike will pinch your thumb against the tank on one hand and on the other hand catch your fingers between the front fairing and the handlebar. However, this does not change the fact, that this is a highly desirable bike which delivers all the passion Ducati stands for.
So what bike is the best rental Ducati for the South of France? This depends on your personal taste and if you’re riding on your own or two up. Our personal preference is the Ducati Multistrada 1200 – the bike which can do it all. However, the final choice is down to you. Rest assured that no matter what Ducati you choose, you will have a great time.
